COMPANY
Contracts to build an aluminum plant in Iceland were signed in 1966. By then, negotiations had been going on between the Swiss company Alusuisse and the Icelandic government for several years. The Icelandic Aluminium Company (ISAL), now Rio Tinto Iceland ltd., was founded - and construction in Straumsvķk was soon underway. Three years later aluminum production started in Iceland and aluminum production started on July 1st 1969.
Since then the company has changed considerably and now produces around 205.000 tons of aluminum a year.
