Production

Every day Rio Tinto Iceland ltd. produces over 500 tons of aluminium. The primary raw material in the production is alumina (Al2O3), a white powder that is a compound of aluminium and oxygen. The alumina is processed in the USA and Ireland and is transported by sea to Iceland where a vacuum unloader removes it from the freighters. It is then transferred into to the red- and white-checkered silos that tower over the production area. A dense phase conveying system then transports the alumina from the silos to the potrooms. By using the dense phase conveying system, all dust contamination is avoided because the system is entirely closed.
